            RE:                Physical Fitness Standards

Introduction:
Hockey Nova Scotia recently held its Annual General Meeting. All the Councils held sessions within each of their designated areas. At the meetings much discussion was held in relation to many different topics. One such topic was related to the “physical demands of officiating”.

Rational:
The game of ice hockey is not only demanding mentally, but also physically. The competitive hockey player is now training year round and not just during the hockey season. This has resulted in a more dynamic game that is freer flowing, thus the speed of the game has increased.

New Fitness Standards:
Effective the 2007-2008 hockey season a new set of fitness standards will be in effect for the HNS officiating program. This change, along with other announced changes, will promote the importance of fitness amongst its officials.
Fitness Criteria: 2007 – 2008 Season
HNS Physical fitness testing guidelines for 20m Léger Shuttle Run (beep Test)

Suggested Minimum Standards
 Level of Hockey                   Referee       Linesman
Minor Hockey Officials      Level 5.0      Level 5.0
Bantam / Midget AAA         Level 7.0      Level 6.0

High School                          Level 8.0      Level 7.0

Jr. C/Major Midget              Level 8.5      Level 7.5
Junior B                                Level 9.0      Level 8.0
JuniorA                               Level 9.5        Level  8.5

AUS                                     Level 10.0    Level 9.0

I hope this finds you well as you prepare for the upcoming season. It is important that all the officiating membership look at this memo as a positive. Officiating is physically demanding and we must all be prepared at the upcoming fitness sessions which are only three months away.
