2015 SEDMHA Female AA Champions

The Pictou County Atom AA Subway Selects went undefeated in winning the SEDMHA Female hockey tournament this past weekend at the BMO Centre in Bedford. In the first game Thursday, the Selects defeated the Bedford Blues 4-1. Leading the charge for the Selects was Erin MacNeil with two goals. Singles went to Kenzie Greencorn and Olivia Marks. Lucia Mason had two assists, while singles went to Ryland Biron and Natasha Hahn. On Friday morning the Selects played the Halifax Hawks, coming out on top with a 3-2 win in overtime on an unassisted marker by Olivia Marks. Greencorn had a goal and assist and Mason had a goal. On Friday afternoon the Selects defeated the Chebucto Atlantics 3-0 and the next morning they defeated Halifax once again 2-0. The two consecutive shutouts were the result of Selects goalie Jorja Burrows stellar play, keeping the Selects in the game by making many timely and acrobatic saves. Single goals for the shutout games went to, Mason, Greencorn, Marks, Biron and Sarah Fraser. MacNeil, Raleigh MacDonald and Lily Leblanc received assists. In the tournament final game on Sunday, the Selects once again met Halifax, who advanced to the final by defeating Chebucto a day earlier. The game was a close affair with the teams tied 1-1 going into the third period. Then, with about 3 minutes left in the game, Kenzie Greencorn roofed the puck on a partial break away, which sent the Selects players and fans into cheering frenzy. The end result was a 4-1 win, with two more quick goals scored to put the game out of reach for Halifax. Scoring in the game were Biron with two, Greencorn and Fraser had singles. Assists went to Biron, Mason, Marks and MacDonald. The Selects have now won two straight tournaments, having won the Subway Cup hosted at the Wellness Centre earlier in the season. For their next tournament, the Selects will be traveling to Ottawa, shortly after Christmas, to participate in the Bell Capital Cup Tournament where they'll be competing against teams from Southern Ontario.
