Bantam AA Subway Selects Earn Provincial Bronze‏

In a hotly contested weekend of exciting female Bantam AA Hockey in Glace Bay, The Pictou County Subway Selects came away with a record of one win, one loss and two ties. Their effort was good enough for a third place finish and a Bronze medal for the second straight year. The Selects had a must win situation against Bedford, the eventual winner, in the last round robin game on Saturday night game to earn a berth in Sunday's final. The Selects played their best game of the weekend in a 1-1 tie against the Blues. Sara MacNeil got the only goal, on the power play midway through the third period,  to give the Selects the lead. Camryn Halliday won a face-off deep in the Bedford end and got the puck back to Sophia Wornell who fired a backdoor pass to MacNeil. MacNeil made no mistake in tipping it home to give the Selects the lead. With just two minutes to play, however, a turnover in their own end lead to a Bedford player in on goal all alone. Netminder, Jenna Landry made a stellar save but the officials ruled the puck had crossed the line. The Subways pushed hard in the overtime and pulled Landry in favour of an extra attacker but could not get the goal they needed to get to Sunday's final. The tie was good enough for a bronze medal in the five team tourney.

Pictou County began the weekend on Friday morning with a 0-0 tie against the host Glace Bay Miners. In the afternoon match against Valley Wild, the Selects fell behind 2-0 early. After calling a timeout, The Selects regrouped and got back on track, scoring midway through the first on a goal by Heath Miller to make it 2-1. Lindsey MacDonald and Brianna Cameron had an assist on the goal. Eva Wornell tied it for the Selects with four minutes to play in the third. Assists went to Miller and Mariah Linehan. Valley bounced back, however, a mere 24 seconds later when they capitalized on a turnover to make it 3-2. Jenna Landry was pulled in favour of an extra skater and the Selects created a number of great opportunities late, but were unable to score the equalizer for their first loss. Landry was stellar in goal for the Selects.

In a must win situation on Saturday morning, The Selects took on the TASA Ducks. TASA opened the scoring seven minutes into the game only to have the Select's Sophia Wornell tie it with a blast from the point a few minutes later.  TASA went up 2-1 just before the end of the first period. The Subways bounced back early in the second When Hannah Porter redirected a Wornell slap pass on the power play. Jenna Reid also drew an assist on the equalizer. Five minutes later, Porter gave the Selects their first lead of the tourney when she corralled a loose puck in front and slid it home for the 3-2 lead. Again, it was Wornell, with her third point of the game and Reid assisting on what would prove to be the winner. TASA pushed hard to earn a tie but they were stymied by solid defensive play and great goaltending by the Selects. The win set up the final match between Bedford and Pictou County as the most meaningful game in the round robin. The winner would play Valley in Sunday's final. Bedford, of course, managed the tie and later went on to defeat Valley by a score of 2-1 in overtime in Sundays final.

A couple of Selects were recognized for their stellar play in the tourney.  Lindsey Smith was named the top defenseman for the tourney and was also named to the all star team. Defenseman Sophia Wornell was named to the all star team as was Selects goalie Jenna Landry, both of whom were excellent all weekend long.  The Selects continue with the league playoffs this weekend when they host Halifax on Saturday in Pictou.
