Bantam AA Selects Close Out Regular Season‏

The Pictou County Bantam AA Subway Selects closed out their regular season this past weekend with a tough three game series against metro opponents. On Friday night the Subways travelled to Bedford where they took on the Blues in a physical, tightly contested affair. The Selects came up on the short end of a 3-1 score for only their 4th loss of the regular season. Mariah Linehan had the only goal from Lindsey Smith. Victoria Dunn took the loss in goal.

On Saturday the Selects hosted the TASA Ducks at the Hector Arena in Pictou. The Selects came out hard looking to avenge the loss and had the edge in play for the majority of the game but could not capitalize on the many scoring chances they generated. The game was scoreless through two periods with the Selects having a decided edge in shots on goal. It was TASA, however, who got on the board first,  just a  minute into the third period. The Subways pressed hard for the equalizer and despite pulling their netminder late in favour of an extra attacker, were unable to score. The Selects outshot the Ducks 25-8 but lost by a score of 1-0. Jenna Landry suffered the loss between the pipes.

On Sunday the Selects returned to Bedford where they took on the Blues in the last game of the regular season. Bedford took a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the first period. The Selects rallied and carried most of the play and were rewarded just two minutes into the middle frame. Eva Wornell walked out from behind the Blues net and slid one through the five hole to tie it at one. Hannah Porter drew an assist on the play. The Selects got took the lead on the power play on a nice backdoor feed to Chloe MacDonald from Jenna Reid.  The Blues tied it up four minutes later when they broke down the right wing and fired a shot that found the mark. After a spirited chat at intermission, the Selects came out hard in the third and got the go ahead goal on the power play. Taylor MacKenzie scored on a rebound in front from Sarah MacNeil and Heath Miller. The Selects looked good for the win but the blues capitalized on a power play of their own with just over five minutes to play in the game. With the score tied at three late in the game, the Selects took another penalty. Jenna Landry made several key saves to hold off the Blues helping the Selects to a 3-3 final.

Pictou County finished second in league standings with 33 points and have earned a birth in the Provincial Championships to be held in Glace Bay the weekend of March 6th. The Selects will travel to the Sweetheart Tournament in PEI next weekend and then begin the building process for their trip to Provincials.
