2015-01-28

2015 MacDonald Gallagher Tournament finalists

This past weekend the Ballantyne Fuels PeeWee AAA Crushers travelled to Sydney and played their best weekend of hockey. Their stellar play earned them a place in the championship game of the MacDonald Gallagher Memorial Tournament hosted by the Cape Breton County Islanders.

Friday afternoon the Crushers faced off against  the Antigonish Bulldogs.  Connor MacLeod set the tone with an early goal in the first period with Scott Long and MacLean Tobin picking up assists. Scoring next was Sam Hickey from Evan Shea and MacLeod and Ethan MacDonald unassisted giving the crew a 3-0 lead after one.  The second period saw the teams exchange 2 goals.  MacLeod from Ryan Green and Tobin and one by Colin MacGillivray.  The Bulldogs fought back scoring 2 in the third but the Fuel Kids hung on for the win.  Brayden Leblanc was rock solid between the pipes. Defensemen Ryan Alexander and Cole Greene made key plays to prevent the Bulldogs from scoring. Raymond Chisholm earned player of the game honours.

The second game was against the host team. It was a high scoring affair with the locals defeating the Islanders 6-1. Scoring for the Crushers were MacLeod(2), Chisholm, Long, Hickey, and Tobin with Cal Maxner(2), Nole Chapman, Shea, MacLeod, R. Green, and Long earning assists.  In goal was Keegan Walker. Connor MacLeod was named player on the game.

On Saturday the boys went to work and defeated the Bedford Blues 4-0. Scoring for the Crushers were Shea(2), MacLeod, and R.Green with helpers to Blake Kontuk, R. Green, Hickey, Chisholm and Shea.  Leblanc made key saves to earn the shutout. Evan Shea was selected player of the game.

Even with a 3-0 record, the Fuel Kids needed a tie or win to get to the crossover game on Sunday.  The crew faced a tough Sydney Steelers team and needed  to dig deep if they were going to advance. Walker had the game of his life and kept his team’s quest alive by making impressive saves.  Kontuk opened the scoring with a feed from Long in the second and the Steelers came back to tie it.  Kontuk scored again to regain the lead.  The third period was intense with end to end play, but with strong defensive play by MacGillivray, C. Green, Maxner, Alexander, and Tobin and with MacLeod shadowing their best player, the crew held it together for the win earning first place in their division.  Player of the game went Keegan Walker.

Sunday morning the Crushers faced the Chebucto Atlantics in the crossover and would not be denied. They came out strong and never looked back earning a 4-1 victory. Scoring for the crew were MacLeod(2), Kontuk, and Long with Maxner(2), Tobin and Long picking up assists.  Brayden Leblanc had a terrific game in goal. Cole Greene was named player of the game.

With only an hour break the team had to regroup and prepare to play against the Truro Bearcats in the Championship.  The Crushers came out strong with Ethan MacDonald opening the scoring with Chapman and Chisholm earning assists.  Truro answered back with 3 goals with MacLeod scoring on a perfect feed from R. Green late in the second to bring them within one. The Bearcats scored early in the third period and sealed the win with an empty net goal for a 5-2 victory. Keegan Walker was solid in goal.  Colin MacGillivray was chosen player of the game.

The goaltenders had a fanastic weekend allowing only 11 goals in 6 games earning a combined goals against average of 1.83. Missing due to injury was defenseman Thomas Schnare. This weekend the Crushers will host the Yarmouth Mariners at the Wellness Centre.  Saturday’s game is at 6:15 pm and Sunday’s game is at 9:15 am.  Come out and support  the team. Go Crushers go!!
